over the last year, i’ve watched the molly craze blow up in wonder. seems like everybody really is looking for molly. but often times i wonder, do people actually take the time to educate themselves? how much do people know about this mysterious little lady? from personal experience and observation, my conclusion is: not a lot. being a naturally curious person, i’ve actually tried to learn a thing or two about molly so i can better understand the way it works, the effects it has on my body, and its power to bring people together. so i’ve decided to write a series of posts that dive deeper into the world of molly
before i go any further, i have to say:
- i am not a doctor, chemist, or neuropsychologists… nor have i had training of any kind in these fields
- i have looked at a variety of sources (forums, news articles, medical journals, government publications, etc.) to gather the information presented. none of the findings are mine alone and they have been paraphrased from original sources in order to deliver content that can actually be understood.
- i cannot vouch for the validity of any of the resources i’ve sited below–you can’t trust everything you read on the internet.
so now that i’ve exposed my complete lack of credibility in the subject, let’s dive in to the first post of the series…
WHAT IS MOLLY?
i wasn’t surprised that this question tops google search trends related to the drug (with a massive spike in the last 12 months). afterall, everybody from miley to lil wayne to cedric gervais (fyi–pronounced jer-VAY) has been blasting the drug’s pseudonym (apparently “molly” comes from “molecule” or “molecular”) across radio waves of all genres.
a common misconception is the difference between “molly” and “ecstasy.” they are the same thing: MDMA (or 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine for you fancy folk out there–the “3,4″ indicates the structure of the molecule). the difference is in the form. ecstasy is a pressed pill, while molly is the crystal or powder form. it is argued that ecstasy isn’t as pure because there are binders and fillers that make up the pill, but technically the same could hold true for molly. in fact, it is a lot easier to tamper with a baggie than it is with a pressed pill (although, it is likely the pill could be manufactured with adulterants, like caffeine, amphetamines, bk-MDMA, MDA, piperazines and PMA/PMMA). in my experience, ecstasy rolls from trusted sources have outperformed powder/crystals–but either way, a good supply never stays around long.
ecstasy pills/rolls/beans (for a crazy detailed resource of different rolls, visit http://www.ecstasydata.org/):
molly powder (usually sold by a gram baggie or capsules):
note: there is a lot of debate on the color of molly crystals. from what i gather, the color can change depending on the manufacturing process. however, in theory, pure crystals should be clear or an opaque white. it makes sense that not removing all of the impurities would leave discoloration.
MDMA is not naturally occurring, thus making it a synthetic drug created in a lab. its freebase form would be a liquid at room temperature. so why no molly oil out there? apparently liquid MDMA has basic properties, making it caustic–meaning able to corrode organic tissue. ouch–we don’t want that! plus, can you imagine pulling out a dropper in the middle of the club?
the MDMA we see is actually MDMA.HCl, which means hydrochloric acid is added to MDMA to produce salt and water–the salt being the end product in crystal form. I found this forum particularly enlightening in explaining the chemistry and purity behind MDMDA: http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/archive/index.php/t-602797.html?s=2cddde501cd75a08c4135aefb410ad6a.
one of the biggest concerns around molly/ecstasy today is its purity. did you make that pill? probably not, so you don’t know what is in it. don’t be ignorant and buy drugs from the first person you meet offering drugs (plus, they could be a narc), and if you’re trying out new pills for the first time, be smart and test them. i have countless friends who do drugs, and the only ones who test are the ones who have been doing drugs the longest… they are wise in their ways.
now that you have a basic understanding of what molly is, check out the second post of the series: how does molly work?
how well do you know molly? share you comments and experiences so we can learn together!
